About
During the TAS Teaching Academic Subject course, students will learn how to create and Teach an Academic Subject using English as the Medium of Instruction EMI. TAS includes teaching Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Math, Arts, Law & Legal Terminologies, Engineering, Management, and Finance & Accounting. TAS can be tailored to any academic subject; it’s up to the teacher to modify the theme and adjust it to a specific field (i,e, Math, Arts, etc.)
You may notice in our videos that most of our TAS teachers are non-native speakers. The idea behind it is to demonstrate how non-native English speakers may teach Academic Subjects in English (Using EMI & Lingua Franca.) In another word, one must be fluent in English, know his/ her science well, and be proficient in his/ her teaching skills to begin Teaching Academic Subjects in a different language, in this case in English. Proficiency in English is developed and progressed through TESOL preparatory classes (Often a TESOL Foundation.) Teaching skills are also enhanced through TESOL Classes, but it’s the EMI & TAS program that links the science and language skills to teaching skills via TESOL. The Southampton Academic Members have developed and contributed the EMI section of this course. TESOL Canada has developed the TAS section. The difference between EMI and TAS is primarily on the fact that TAS covers Academic Subjects used in primary, secondary, high schools, as well as colleges and universities. EMI, on the other hand, refers to all fields of instruction from technical skills, to corporate training. EMI may cover any Employment Training and not necessarily Academic Subjects. In this program, we will have an overview of EMI and its application in TAS. We will also cover Teaching Pathways in Math and Science.
To become a great science or academic teacher, often native speakers also challenge themselves, so it’s not just the language, it’s the science, and knowing HOW to Teach it. Hence, we will demonstrate How to explain, What to teach, and How to instruct in a different language.
Teaching Pathways in Math courses (e.g., Math Literacy for College Students, Quantway™, and Statway™) are becoming a favourite way to redesign college math programs. However, their innovative nature provides a set of challenges both in and out of the classroom. To overcome those challenges, this course will address the following topics.
